From Latin Alexandrīa, Alexandrēa, itself a borrowing from Ancient Greek Ἀλεξάνδρεια (Alexándreia), a city in Egypt bearing the name of its founder Ἀλέξανδρος (Aléxandros) (Alexander the Great).
