Etymology

From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾlcʾn /⁠arzān⁠/), 𐫀𐫡𐫉𐫀𐫗 (ʾrzʾn /⁠arzān⁠/, valuable, worthy), from [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾlc /⁠arz⁠/, worth, value) + [Book Pahlavi needed] (-ʾn /⁠-ān⁠/). Cognate with Parthian 𐫀𐫡𐫋𐫀𐫗 (ʾrjʾn /⁠aržān⁠/, worthy), Kurdish and the following Iranian borrowings: Old Armenian արժան (aržan, worthy; cheap), Classical Syriac ܐܪܙܢ (ʾarzān, cheap).
