From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾlcʾn /arzān/), 𐫀𐫡𐫉𐫀𐫗 (ʾrzʾn /arzān/, “valuable, worthy”), from [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾlc /arz/, “worth, value”) + [Book Pahlavi needed] (-ʾn /-ān/). Cognate with Parthian 𐫀𐫡𐫋𐫀𐫗 (ʾrjʾn /aržān/, “worthy”), Kurdish and the following Iranian borrowings: Old Armenian արժան (aržan, “worthy; cheap”), Classical Syriac ܐܪܙܢ (ʾarzān, “cheap”).
