اِسْتَعَاذَ (istaʕāḏa) X (non-past يَسْتَعِيذُ (yastaʕīḏu), verbal noun اِسْتِعَاذَة (istiʕāḏa))

  1. to protect oneself [with بِ (bi) ‘by means of something’]
  2. to seek the protection [with بِ (bi) ‘of someone’ and مِن (min) ‘from something’]
    • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 16:98:
      فَإِذَا قَرَأْتَ الْقُرْآنَ فَٱسْتَعِذْ بِٱللَّٰهِ مِنَ ٱلشَّيْطَانِ ٱلرَّجِيمِ
      faʔiḏā qaraʔta l-qurʔāna fastaʕiḏ bi-l-lāhi mina š-šayṭāni r-rajīmi
      When you recite the Quran, seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the accursed.
