Etymology

From the root ش م ل (š-m-l); compare شَمَلَ (šamala, to hold, to contain).

Verb

اِشْتَمَلَ (ištamala) VIII (non-past يَشْتَمِلُ (yaštamilu), verbal noun اِشْتِمَال (ištimāl))

  1. to comprise, to contain, to include, to consist of (عَلَى (ʕalā) something)
  2. to surround from all sides, to encompass
  3. to extend to all, to be general
  4. to wrap oneself up in one's clothes or a cloak
