Etymology[edit]

From اَلْ(al-) + أَبْنَاء(ʾabnāʾ), plural of اِبْن(ibn, son).

The second sense may be a short form of the phrase أَبْنَاء الْدَوْلَة(ʾabnāʾ al-dawla, literally sons of the state, i.e. the Abbasid Caliphate).
