From late Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾwmyt' /⁠*ummēd⁠/, hope) from earlier [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾymyt' /⁠ēmēd⁠/, hope), from Proto-Iranian *hamwátiš. Akin to Baluchi امیت (omit), Northern Kurdish hêvî, Central Kurdish ھیوا (hîwa), Southern Kurdish ھِمێ (himê), Pashto امید (umīd).
