Of onomatopoeic origin; compare Bashkir бәпәй (bəpəy), Crimean Tatar bebey, Kazakh бөбек (böbek), Tatar бәбәй (bäbäy), Turkmen bäbek, Uyghur بوۋاق (bowaq) and, more distantly, English baby, French bébé, etc.
