Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀩𑀳𑀼𑀢𑁆𑀢 (bahutta), from Sanskrit बहुत्व (bahutva, muchness, abundance, multitude), from Sanskrit बहु (bahu, much, many, abundant) from Proto-Indo-European *bʰenǵʰ- (thick). The development from a noun to an adjective was influenced by Prakrit 𑀅𑀳𑀼𑀢𑁆𑀢 (pahutta-), from Sanskrit प्रभूत (prabhūta, come forth; abundant). Compare Bengali বহুত (bohut), Gujarati બહુ (bahu) and Hindustani बहुत (bahut) / بَہُت (bahut). Doublet of بَتھیرا (batherā) and بَہُتیرا (bahuterā)
