Etymology

[edit]

From earlier تركیا (türkiya), from Latin Turcia, ultimately from Byzantine Greek Τουρκίᾱ (Tourkíā, Turkey). Probably borrowed via Italian Turchia, as suggested by the earlier form.

Explanations deriving it from Arabic تُرْكِيَّة (turkiyya) are folk etymologies.
