Etymology[edit]

Likely borrowed from Iranian, compare especially Northern Kurdish zebeş and jebeş as well as Zazaki debes. Ultimately from Middle Persian hlbyck' (xarbīzag, watermelon); a doublet of خِرْبِز‎(ḵirbiz, melon).
