Arabic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Cognate with Classical Syriac ܓܽܘܪܒܳܐ(gurbā), Hebrew גֶּרֶב(géreḇ) and Central Kurdish گۆروا(gorwa), گۆرە(gore); of disputed etymology due to unknown direction of borrowings:

  • Possibly Persian جوراب‎(jôrâb, sock, stocking), with earlier forms Persian گورب(gōrab), گوراب(gōrāb), speculatively a metathesis of Middle Persian *gōrb/pāy (literally grave of foot) which has potential to be folk etymology.
  • Alternatively the Iranian was borrowed from Aramaic גְּרָב / גְּרַב(gəraḇ, gər؜āḇ, skin bottle or pouch), with it being unknown which language family the new specified semantic meaning as a sock developed first.
