Etymology[edit]

From earlier گورب ‎(gōrab), from Middle Persian *gōrab. Compare Kurdish gore / گۆرە, Classical Syriac ܓܘܪܒܐ ‎(gurbā), Hebrew גרב ‎(gérev). Probably cognate with English gear, Old Norse gervi.
