[edit]From Proto-Semitic. Compare Akkadian 𒁕𒇻 (/dalū, dūlu/, “bucket”), Aramaic דול (daul, “bucket”), Classical Syriac ܕܰܘܠܳܐ (dawlā, “pail, bucket”), Hebrew דְּלִי (dəlī, “pail, bucket”), as well as the loanwords from Semitic Old Armenian դոյլ (doyl) and Persian دول (dul, “bucket”).
