[edit]Either derived or merely related to דָּלָה (dalá, “to dangle, suspend”), as buckets were hanging above the water in a well. Compare Classical Syriac ܕܰܘܠܳܐ (dawlā), Arabic دَلْو (dalw), as well as Old Armenian դոյլ (doyl), a Semitic borrowing.
