Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian, borrowed into Aramaic סַפְטָא / ܣܰܦܛܳܐ (sap̄əṭā) and hence Arabic سَفَط (safaṭ). Akin to Old Armenian սապատ (sapat), a Middle Iranian borrowing.

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Doesn't look like any real attempts at deducing the word's ultimate origin have been made in the literature. Seems a bit like a substrate borrowing based on phonetics and word category.”
