From the Proto-Semitic *šidṯ- (six), cognates with Hebrew שישה / שִׁשָּׁה (shishá), Classical Syriac ܫܬ݁ܳܐ (štāʾ), Ge'ez ስድስቱ (sədəstu), Ugaritic 𐎘𐎘𐎚 (ṯṯt), and Akkadian 𒐋 (šeššet). Ultimately from a Proto-Afro-Asiatic root; compare to Egyptian sjsw, Central Atlas Tamazight ⵙⴹⵉⵚ (sḍiṣ), and Hausa shidà.
