Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian [script needed] (šustan /HLLWN-tn'/), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *k⁽ʷ⁾sewd-.

The literary present stem شوی(šuy) is directly from Middle Persian [script needed] (šōy /šwy-/); the colloquial present stem شور(šur) is because of the verb being conflated with the synonymous verb شوریدن(šuridan). Compare Gilaki شوردن(šurdən), Mazanderani شوردن(šurdan).
