Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian HLLWN-tn' (šustan).

The literary present stem شوی(šuy) is directly from Middle Persian šwy- (šōy), the colloquial present stem شور(šur) is influence from a Caspian language. Compare Gilaki شوردن(šurdən), Mazanderani شوردن(šurdan).
