Etymology[edit]

From Classical Syriac ܦܬܘܐ(peṯwā, spinning out, breadth (of words)), with some details in the sectarian semantics of Late Antiquity Aramaic crossed with Arabic now being obscure. أَفْتَى(ʾaftā, to deliver a formal opinion) was parallelly borrowed.
