From Parthian fryʾn (fryān, friyān, friend, beloved). Cognate with Avestan 𐬟𐬭𐬌𐬌𐬀 (friia, dear, beloved, affectionate; a friend, a well-wisher), Sanskrit प्रिय (priya).
