Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *priHás (“dear, beloved”), from Proto-Indo-European *priHós (“dear, liked, beloved”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬟𐬭𐬌𐬌𐬀 (friia), Latin prō-prius (→ English proper, appropriate), Russian приятель (prijatelʹ, “friend”), English friend and free.
