Punjabi[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Related to پِھرنا (phirnā, “to roam”), likely a descendant from tonal pronunciation. Compare Hindustani پِھر (phir) / फिर (phir).
Pronunciation[edit]
Adverb[edit]
فیْر • (fer) (Gurmukhi spelling ਫ਼ੇਰ or ਫਿਰ)
- then, afterwards, so
- فیْر کی ہویا؟
- fer kī hoeyā?
- Then what happened?
- again, once again
- فیْر کَر ― fer kar ― Do it again
Usage notes[edit]
In Western Punjabi, the lemma is written with ف (f) and exactly how it is pronounced, whereas in Eastern Punjabi (in the Gurmukhi script), the dominant spelling is ਫਿਰ (phir), likely a word with tonal pronunciation, hence the pronunciation may vary per dialect. Though the f sound is considered foreign in Punjabi, and most other South Asian languages, here the sound is natively deriven.
