From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hrawdʰás (red metal; copper, brass), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rowdʰós (red thing), from *h₁rewdʰ- (red). Cognate with Middle Persian [script needed] (lwd /⁠rôy⁠/, brass) and Urdu لوہا (lohā).
