Etymology

From Aramaic מַרְוָא / ܡܲܪܘܵܐ (marwā, “Origanum syriacum syn. Origanum maru”), from Middle Persian [script needed] (mlc' /⁠marw⁠/), related to Sanskrit मरुव (maruva, “marjoram”). Also found in مَرْدَقُوش (mardaqūš, “marjoram”). The Aramaic has been borrowed into Ancient Greek μᾶρον (mâron) and from Ancient Greek again into Arabic as مَارُون (mārūn, “Origanum syriacum”).
