From Middle Persian 𐭬𐭮𐭲 (mst /mast/, “drunk, bemused”). From Proto-Indo-Iranian *matˢtás (“drunk, intoxicated”), from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂d- (“wet”). Cognate with Sanskrit मत्त (matta).
