Synchronically from the root م ك س (m-k-s), diachronically the noun has been loaned from Aramaic מכסא,‎ ܡܟܣܐ (maḵsā, tax), from Akkadian 𒃻𒋻 (NIG2.KUD] /⁠miksu⁠/, tax); the verbs are denominal.
