Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian [script needed] (myh /⁠mēx⁠/), from Old Persian 𐎶𐎹𐎢𐎧 (MYUX /⁠mayūxa⁠/), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mayū́kʰas (peg, nail), ultimately a borrowing from the the BMAC substrate. Cognate with Sanskrit मयूख (mayūkha, peg).
