From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (gwmʾl-tn' /⁠gumārdan⁠/), 𐫃𐫇𐫖𐫀𐫡𐫅𐫗 (gwmʾrdn /⁠gumārdan⁠/, to appoint, commission, entrust), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *mere (to delay, hinder). Cognate with Latin mora (delay).
