Etymology

From Middle Persian gwmbt' (gumbad, dome, fire-temple), from Classical Syriac ܩܘܒܬܐ (qubbəṯā). Compare Old Armenian գմբեթ (gmbetʻ) and Georgian გუმბათი (gumbati), Iranian borrowings. Akin to Chinese 拱北 (Gǒngběi), a borrowing.
