From Middle Persian 𐭢𐭭𐭰 ‎(ganj, treasure), from Old Persian, probably from Median. Compare Median *ganza-bara- and Iranian borrowings: Old Armenian գանձ ‎(ganj), Georgian განძი ‎(ganʒi), Ancient Greek γάζα ‎(gáza), Latin gaza, Classical Syriac ܓܙܐ ‎(gazzā), Hebrew גֵּנֶז ‎(gḗnez), Arabic كنز ‎(kanz) (> Spanish alcancía, Portuguese alcanzia).
