From Middle Persian KYNA (gōspand, sheep, small cattle), from Avestan 𐬔𐬀𐬊-𐬯𐬞𐬆𐬧𐬙𐬀- (gao-spəṇta-, beneficent cow), a compound of 𐬔𐬀𐬊- (gao-, cow) + 𐬯𐬞𐬆𐬧𐬙𐬀 (spəṇta, holy), compare گاو (gâv) and سِپَند (sepand).
