From the root ܚ-ܡ-ܥ (ḥ-m-ʿ). Parallel formation to Arabic حُمَّاض (ḥummāḍ, “sorrel, dock”). Doublet of ܚܲܡܘܼܨܬܵܐ (ḥammūṣtā, “rhubarb”).
