- Possibly from the root ܢ ܛ ܦ (n ṭ p) related to dripping;
- Possibly from ܛ ܘ ܦ (ṭ w p) related to floating;
- Possibly a back-formation from the plural Classical Syriac ܛܘܦܐ (ṭuppe), the plural form of Classical Syriac ܛܘܦܬܐ (ṭup̄tā, “drop”), a cognate.
