Elliptical form of ܐܪܥܐ ܝܒܝܫܬܐ (ʾarʿāʾ yabbīštāʾ), from ܐܪܥܐ (ʾarʿāʾ, land) + ܝܒܝܫܬܐ (yabbīštāʾ, dry), from the root ܝ-ܒ-ܫ (y-b-š) related to dryness. Compare Hebrew יַבָּשָׁה (yabbāšâ).
