[edit]Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac, an ellipsis of ܐܪܥܐ ܝܒܝܫܬܐ (ʾarʿāʾ yabbīštā, literally “dry land”); cognate to Hebrew יַבֶּשֶׁת (yabéshet).
