Etymology[edit]

Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac ܡܛܠܩܢܐ in the sense of the diacritic.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (standard) IPA(key): [mtˤallqaːnaː]

Adjective[edit]

ܡܛܲܠܩܵܢܵܐ (mṭalqānā) (feminine ܡܛܲܠܩܵܢܝܼܬ݂ܵܐ (mṭalqānīṯā), plural ܡܛܲܠܩܵܢܹܐ (mṭalqānē))

  1. destroying, eliminating, consuming

Noun[edit]

ܡܛܲܠܩܵܢܵܐ (mṭalqānām (plural ܡܛܲܠܩܵܢܹܐ (mṭalqānē), feminine ܡܛܲܠܩܵܢܝܼܬ݂ܵܐ (mṭalqānīṯā))

  1. destroyer, eliminator
  2. (typography) linea occultans, mtalqana, the diacritic in the Syriac scripts consisting of one stroke on a letter used to indicate the letter is unpronounced
    ܡܕ݂ܝܼܢ݇ܬܵܐ (mḏītā, city)
    ܐܲܟ݂ܚ݇ܕ݂ܵܐ (aḵḏā, together)
    ܚܲܕ݇ (ḥa, one)

Usage notes[edit]

  • This diacritic is not normally applied to letters which have lost their value on a dialectical level- for example, ܒܹܥܹ̈ܐ (bēˁē, eggs) containing the letter ayn, does not have a linea occultans, despite ayn mostly losing its value in Assyrian-Neo Aramaic dialects
