[edit]Borrowed from Middle Persian smwl (/*samōr/) or Central Kurdish سیمۆرە (sîmore, “squirrel”); compare Classical Syriac ܣܲܡܘܼܪܵܐ (sammūrā, “sable”), Persian سمور (samur, “sable”), Arabic سَمُّور (sammūr, “sable, marten”), and Hebrew סַמּוּר (samúr, “polecat”).
