[edit]From the masculine imperative of ܦܵܝܹܫ (pāyēš, “remain”) + ܫܠܵܡܵܐ (šlāmā, “peace”), literally “remain in peace”; compare Arabic مَعَ ٱلسَّلَامَةِ (maʕa s-salāmati).
