Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hánȷ́ʰas (“anxiety, fear”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂énǵʰ-o-s, from *h₂enǵʰ- (“constricted, tight; distress anxiety”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬄𐬰𐬀𐬵 (ązah), Latin angor (“anguish”), Proto-Germanic *angazaz (“worry”). Also distantly related to English anxiety.
