Inherited from Prakrit *𑀅𑀝𑁆𑀝 (*aṭṭa), from Sanskrit *आ॒र्त (*ārtá), a vṛddhi derivative of *ऋ॒त (*ṛtá, “ground”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hr̥Htás, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂l̥h₁-tós (“ground”), from *h₂elh₁-. Compare with Gujarati આટો (āṭo) and Hindustani आटा (āṭā) / آٹا (āṭā).
