Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *HaHtíṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *HaHtíš, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂n̥h₂tís (“duck”). Cognate with Latin anas, Ancient Greek νῆττᾰ (nêtta), Ossetian ацц (acc) Old East Slavic уты (uty), Old Prussian antis, Old English æned (whence English ennet).
