From Proto-Balto-Slavic *ánˀtis, i-stem variant of Proto-Indo-European *h₂énh₂ts (duck, aquatic bird).[1][2][3] Cognate with Old Prussian antis, Proto-Slavic *ǫtь, annet.

Probably related to añt (on),[4] or to Proto-Indo-European *h₂entíos, Proto-Indo-European *h₂ent-.[5] Alternatively, related to Armenian անութ (anutʻ, armpit), via a Proto-Indo-European *h₂(V)nt-h₂-o-. Cognate with Latvian azuote (bosom).
