Semi-learned borrowing from Sanskrit कर्णधार (karṇadhāra). Doublet of कनहार (kanhār) and कनहारा (kanhārā), which exhibit regular sound changes but are now obsolete.

Ultimately from Classical Persian قَنْدَهَار (qandahār) or Pashto کندهار (kandahār), probably passing through Urdu قَنْدھار (qandhār). Doublet of सिकंदर (sikandar) and Indo-Aryan historic name गांधार (gāndhār) or गंधार (gandhār), ultimately from गान्धार (gāndhār), from the Iranian source.
