Etymology

From Old Marathi काळज (kāḷaja), from Sanskrit कालेय (kāleya, liver). Doublet of काळजी (kāḷjī). Cognate with Hindi कलेजा (kalejā).

Usage notes

  • While काळीज (kāḷīj) technically refers to the liver organ (see यकृत (yakŕt)), it has various other meanings (heart, mind, courage, etc.) when commonly used.
