From Maharastri Prakrit 𑀔𑀡𑀇 (khaṇaï), from Sanskrit खनति (khanati), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kánati (“to dig”). Cognate with Marathi खणणे (khaṇṇe) and Persian کندن (kandan).
