Etymology 1[edit]

Probably from a vernacular form of ग्रथ् (grath) / ग्रन्थ् (granth, to arrange, string together), via a series of sound changes ग्रथ् (grath) > *गठ् (gaṭh) > घट् (ghaṭ), with a metathesis of the consonant being aspirated.
