[edit]

Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘕𑘳𑘡 (juna), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀚𑀼𑀡𑁆𑀡 (juṇṇa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit जूर्ण (jūrṇá),[1] variant of जीर्ण (jīrṇá).

[edit]
  • (formal) IPA(key): /d͡zu.ne/
  • (colloquial) IPA(key): /d͡zu.nə/
  • Hyphenation: जु‧ने
  • Rhymes: -e

Adjective

[edit]

जुने (j̈une)

  1. old
    Synonym: (less common) पुराणे (purāṇe)
    Antonyms: नवे (nave), नवीन (navīn)
  2. ancient
    Synonym: प्राचीन (prācīn)

Usage notes

[edit]
  • म्हातारे (mhātāre) is used instead of जुने (j̈une) when referring to the advanced biological age of people or animals, especially senior citizens.[2]
  • जुने (j̈une) generally refers to the age of things rather than people. An exception to this generalisation is when it refers to for people that have been known for a long time such as:[2]
    जुना मित्रj̈unā mitraa longtime friend
which is distinct from:
म्हातारा मित्रmhātārā mitraan elderly friend
