From Proto-Indo-European *gʷiH-. Cognate with Ancient Greek βιός (biós, “bow-string, tendon”), Old Church Slavonic жила (žila), Lithuanian gýsla, Old Armenian ջիլ (ǰil) , Avestan 𐬲𐬌𐬌𐬁 (žiiā, “bow-string”) and Persian زه (zeh).
