From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hnā́bʰ-i-š (navel, centre), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃nóbʰ-i-s, from *h₃nebʰ- (navel). Cognate with Latin umbilīcus, Old Prussian nabis, Avestan 𐬥𐬁𐬟𐬁𐬌 (nāfāi), Ancient Greek ὀμφαλός (omphalós), Persian ناف (nâf), English navel.
