Etymology
[edit]Of uncertain origin. Usually derived from Proto-Indo-Aryan *paḷṭas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *paltas (whence Persian پرده (parde, “curtain, veil”)), from Proto-Indo-European *pol-to-s, from *pel- (“to cover, wrap; hide, cloth”). This would make the term cognate with Proto-Slavic *poltьno (“linen, cloth”), Ancient Greek πέλτη (péltē, “a small leather shield”). Alternatively, borrowed from substrate.
Likely related to पटल (paṭala, “roof”) and पट्ट (paṭṭa, “slab, cloth”).
