From Proto-Indo-Aryan *púśćas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *púsćas, from Proto-Indo-European *púḱsos (“the tailed one”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬞𐬎𐬯𐬀 (pusa), Old English fox (whence English fox).
