Borrowed from Classical Persian فرات (furāt), from Arabic الْفُرَات (al-furāt), ultimately from Akkadian 𒀀𒇉𒌓𒄒𒉣 (ÍDPurattu). Compare Bengali ফোরাত (forat), Punjabi ਫ਼ਰਾਤ (farāt).
